Internships at the University of the Basque Country

The GTA (Groups, Topology and Applications) research group at the University of the Basque Country in Bilbao, Spain, launches a call for internship positions in one of the following areas of interest of the group:

  • p-Adic Anlaytic Groups (in charge of Jon Gonzalez-Sanchez)
  • Automorphisms of rooted trees (in charge of Fernández Alcober)
  • Combinatorial and Geometric Group Theory (in charge of Federico Berlai)

The selected candidates will develop a research project under the guidance of a supervisor of the GTA group. The internships will last from 4 to 6 weeks in the period from May 22nd to June 30th, to be agreed between the candidate and his/her supervisor. The deadline for application is April 26th.

REQUIREMENTS OF THE CANDIDATES

  • Having completed at least four years of undergraduate+postgraduate studies in Mathematics not earlier than January 2015.
  • Strong academic record.
  • Special interest in one of the research areas of the GTA group.

WE OFFER

  • Full board accommodation during the internship.
  • Travel expenses up to 250 euros.
  • Possibility of applying for a PhD fellowship at the University of the Basque Country.

 

HOW TO APPLY

  • Comprehensive curriculum vitae, and full academic record.
  • Cover letter.
  • Two recommendation letters.
  • Date proposal for the internship.

We are very pleased to announced that Prof. Zlil Sela (Hebrew University of Jerusalem) is visiting the Department of Mathematics of the UPV/EHU. He is going to give a graduate course in geometric group theory. The course is going to be two-weeks long starting next week, i.e. the weeks of January, 16 and January, 23.

We will meet Monday-Wednesday-Friday from 11.00 to 12.30.

CURSO DE DOCTORADO «ACCIONES DE GRUPOS SOBRE VARIEDADES». 14-17  NOVIEMBRE, UNIVERSIDAD DEL PAÍS VASCO.

PROFESOR: Antonio Viruel (Universidad de Málaga)

RESUMEN: Este curso pretende ser una primera introducción a las  técnicas de los llamados grupos de transformaciones. Veremos cómo la  geometría y la teoría de grupos se complementan cuando consideramos  grupos actuando sobre variedades, de modo que si un grupo G actúa de  manera efectiva sobre una variedad M, las propiedades geométricas de M  pueden leerse en G del mismo modo que las propiedades algebraicas de G  pueden leerse en M. Ejemplos de estas situaciones son la conjetura del  rango y las acciones libres sobre productos de esferas, o las  conjeturas de estructura sobre los grupos de difeomorfismos de una  variedad.

Cambio de fecha en la sesión especial de teoría de grupos RSME-2017, Zaragoza

Estimados miembros de la Red Ibérica en Teoría de Grupos:

para evitar coincidir con otro evento (), hemos cambiado las fechas de la sesión especial en teoría de grupos que se celebrará con motivo de la Bienal RSME 2017 en Zaragoza. Las nuevas fechas son lunes 30 y martes 31 de enero de 2017. Si pensabais asistir pero no podéis hacerlo en estas nuevas fechas, escribidme por favor y veremos que se puede hacer.

Os recuerdo que si estáis interesados en dar una charla corta, necesitamos que nos enviéis a este mismo correo un título y un resumen antes del 30 de octubre y que habrá sesión de pósteres (se han de enviar mediante la web del congreso).

Para participar en la sesión hay que inscribirse en el congreso y pagar la correspondiente cuota. Pero los estudiantes incluidos los de doctorado tienen cuota reducida y las personas que den charla en una sesión especial pagan cuota socio RSME (aunque no lo sean).
