Workshop on the Hanna Neumann Conjecture and Related Topics

Dear All,

The Workshop on the Hanna Neumann Conjecture and Related Topics will be held in Bilbao from the 29th of June to the 10th of July 2015. There will be 3 courses of about 10 hours each given by Yago Antolin-Pichel, Joel Friedman and Andrei Jaikin and covering different proofs of the Hanna Neumann Conjecture and generalisations. There will also be contributed talks by other participants.

Detailed information can be found on the workshop website http://www.ehu.eus/es/web/greca/general-information

The organising committee is pleased to announce that registration for  the workshop is now open and that there is some funding available for graduate students and early career researchers. Please follow  the link http://www.ehu.eus/es/web/greca/how-to-register for more details and information on how to register.

We ask for your help in advertising this event and distributing this announcement through mailing lists and social networks.

We hope to see you in Bilbao!

Representation Theory Summer School Lisbon

There will be a Representation Theory Summer School for undergraduates organized by the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon from July 15th to July 19th 2013 at the headquarters of the Gulbenkian Foundation in Lisbon.

The school consists of three 5 hour courses:

  • “Representations of finite groups” by Eric Sommers (University of Massachusetts)
  • “Representations of quivers” by Pavel Etingof (MIT)
  • “Continuous symmetry and Lie algebras” by Peter Trapa (University of Utah)

More information, including instructions on how to apply for funding (the procedure is very simple), is available at

Atentamente,

Title: Galois theory for rings, algebraic varieties, and topological spaces

Summary:

There are strong analogies between Galois groups and fundamental groups. For example, subgroups of a Galois group correspond to intermediate fields in very much the same way that subgroups of the fundamental group correspond to covering spaces. In the 1950s Grothendieck gave a uniform definition of these groups in the language of categories. Although his approach is more abstract, it simplifies many results, and leads to the introduction of fundamental groups in algebraic geometry. Using these methods one finds not only analogies, but actual relations between Galois groups and fundamental groups.

In this course we will reformulate the basic results on Galois groups and fundamental groups in this common categorical language, and discuss their generalizations to commutative rings and algebraic varieties.
